A Lifelong Historian at Heart, Preserving the Stories That Matter

My name is Wayne Wiebe, and while life has taken me through many places and chapters, the history of Southwestern Ontario has always been part of my identity. Goderich — with its lakeside beauty, its resilience, its people, and its deep roots — has become a place I care about deeply. Its stories deserve to be remembered, protected, and shared.

I’ve spent years preserving local history through community projects, websites, and archives. From Guelph, where I grew up, to the Huron-Kinloss region where I now live, I’ve always believed that the places we call home shape us in ways that stay with us forever.

Goderich is no exception. Its heritage is rich, meaningful, and worth safeguarding.

Why I Created Historic Goderich

Too much of our local history disappears quietly — old photographs tucked away in drawers, stories remembered by only a few, buildings changed or lost over time. I believe strongly that these memories should not fade.

Historic Goderich is my way of helping preserve the identity of a town that has endured, rebuilt, and thrived.

Through this project, I hope to:

• Keep Goderich’s past alive
• Honour the generations who built and rebuilt the town
• Help residents reconnect with the Goderich they remember
• Create a space where history is shared, not forgotten
• Bring together community stories, photos, and memories in one place

For many people, Goderich is more than a town — it’s home. And home deserves to be remembered.

My Connection to the Community

Living in the Huron-Kinloss and Goderich region has given me a deep appreciation for its character:

• The Courthouse Square that has stood at the heart of the community
• The harbour and industries that shaped local life
• The neighbourhoods that grew through generations
• The resilience shown after the 2011 tornado
• The pride that comes from calling Goderich your own

These stories matter. They deserve a place where they can be preserved and passed on.

A Personal Mission

Historic Goderich is more than a website — it’s a commitment to honouring the past. I’ve always believed that history is not just something we study; it’s something we carry with us. It shapes our identity, our community, and our sense of belonging.

My hope is that this archive becomes a place where people find:
